SERVER CLIENT APPLICATION WITH X2GO IN GOETHEINSTITUT YAOUNDE

Goetheinstitut visited Linux Friends Limbe, they were impress with their network connection and needed the same network for their library. The first time they invited Linux Friends for a seminar and the second time Linux Friend was invited to install this net work with thin clients. linux friends travelled to Yaounde on the 14th of December 2010 and on the 15th of December we started the work and ended on the 16th of December 2010 that is to say two days.

The plan was to install a network of 1 server and 10 computers. this ten computers were PC engines alixs boards. They had bought all the materials for the installation, thin clients were all new but the server was not new, but they bought a new had drive .

Goetheinstitut had a dual core machine which they wanted us to install as server, we removed the old hard disk and replace it with a new 500gb hard disk we also remove the graphic card because there was no more space for PCI slot and we set the second network card (beside the on board).

We started the installation by deactivating the floppy because this machine had no floppy and the machine was always asking for the floppy. After deactivating the floppy it was ok to start. To start we insert the ubuntu cd 10.04 first as live cd then after we did the installation.

With the live cd we tested if we had two Ethernet card and it was ok, internet was working as we tested it with the browser( we could not test internet with ping because we were behind a firewall that doesn't accept the ping.

With the live cd we tested the memory and it showed us 2.5 GB we also tested the cpu it was 3.16GHZ dual core and hard disk with 500 GB.

Everything was ok and we restarted the machine without the cd in this time we split the group, one group to assemble the thin client and test them and did the installation of x2g0 The other group prepared the workstation and cabling through the room.

x2go installation

We went to the browser, open x2go and follow the installations and we open a mail with a script to install x2go (x2gohome for ubuntu). We had connection problem and we had to restart and do the command step by step, it was a very long process at the end of the day we had not finish with the installation, we had many problem of time out because of the internet problem . At the end of the day it was not finished, we decide to continue the installation (it was in the chroot)

The next day we continued with the installation the command of the night was finished but with a mistake so we restarted this command again , in this time we had a good connection, we continued the installation and it stop normally

We restarted the computer and the computer refused to start . The problem was IP: config: eth0 hardwaare address 00:19:99:4a:52:94 mtu 1500 DHCP

We tested few things but could not resolved the problem so we decided to put our own hard disk so that the institut can work, so we finish the installation of 7 client. 3 client should be done. At the end we showed to the people responsible how to start the server, how to start the client, how to stop the server and how to stop the client. We also put it in a short documentation in the computer.

Before we left we had a discussion with the coordinator of the Goetheinstitut and we decided the following.
